Which flowers are suitable for a dried flower bouquet?
About all cut flowers and grasses can be dried, so the right method and a little patience is much more important. Note however, that there are slight differences in the drying time depending on the type of flower. Plants that generally contain little moisture and have a soft stem, for example, dry faster than flowers with a firm stem. Particularly popular plants are pampas grass, yarrow, lavender but also roses and hydrangeas. You can really let your creativity run free and buy different plants according to your taste at a local flower shop and combine them at home.
DIY Dried flowers: Step-by-Step
Once you've assembled your flowers, you're ready to dry them! All you need are the following items:
- Flowers of your choice
- a piece of string
- a pair of scissors
- a branch or wooden stick
Before you dry your plants, they need some preparation. If present, remove leaves and thorns from the lower third of the stems to better show off the flowers. Then cut the stem at an angle at the bottom and put the plants in fresh water for one or two hours. This will give the flowers another chance to soak up water and become more stable.
Next, take the plants out of the water, sort them by type and tie them together with a string. Take a branch or wooden stick and attach your flower bundles to it with a little distance between them. The flowers should face downwards so that they can retain their original shape. Hang the plants in a dry and dark place. Alternatively, you can hang the flowers upside down on a nail on the wall. Try to avoid direct sunlight on the flowers, otherwise they will lose their colour intensity. Now it's time to wait!
Depending on the type of plant, the plants will need a few days to weeks to dry completely. When the time has come, you can take the flowers down and free them from their bundles. If you want to make your dried flowers even more stable, you can fix them with a little bit of hairspray. Otherwise, you can now go ahead and make your own bouquet!
Simply take your dried flowers and arrange them in a way that you feel is most beautiful and that shows off the different flowers and colours the best. Finally, you can tie your bouquet with a beautiful bow and gift it to someone special or put it directly in a vase at home! Your dried flower bouquet is ready!
