How did you start illustrating?

When I was travelling, I started filling a small personal diary with illustrations. In Scotland I then started an illustration course to stay more up to date with the subject and found it very enjoyable!

Who is your favorite artist/illustrator?

There are so many great artists! One of my favorite artists is Egon Schiele, a painter from Austria. I love his style and the beautiful colors he used in his paintings. I lived in Vienna for a while and went to the Leopold Museum quite often to see his works. It was always very impressive!

As for illustrators... I follow a lot of them, which makes it harder to pick just one person. But Amy Moss, for example, is one of my favorites, I really admire her style!

What technique/means do you prefer to use for your illustrations?

I mainly create digital illustrations, but I really enjoy playing with different textures and layers on my iPad.

How do you approach a design for PICKMOTION? Do you have an idea that you start with or do you start with spontaneous sketches? Would you like to tell us a bit more about the creative process?

Usually I just start by sketching out different spontaneous ideas or I start with a little research of images that I like.

It can also start with a certain color palette. When I discover a color palette that I like, I think of a theme around it that would fit it best.

Sometimes funny ideas arise when we have a brainstorming session as a team. That is definitely the funniest way to come up with new ideas.

From the first sketch to the final design

For which occasion do you like to create designs for PICKMOTION?

I definitely have the most fun thinking about funny and maybe a little silly ideas. I usually start with a sketch of my idea and only then think about which category it might fit into. Sometimes that changes, you start with a certain category in mind and at the end of the process a completely different idea emerges. But that's what makes it particularly exciting, I think!

What is your favorite illustration?

My favorite illustration at the moment is one by Ana Seixas because it has such a lovely summer feeling. But I also really like the July wallpaper that our intern Jolene designed for our newsletter. It's such a cute illustration with colorful jellyfish that also have the perfect summer vibe.

Do you enjoy sending and receiving postcards?

I love receiving postcards! Especially when you're not expecting one. It's always a nice surprise! I also like buying postcards for my friends and family, but I have to admit that I usually forget to send them... (laughs).
