You live in Osaka. Were you born and raised there? And if so, what was it like? If not, where are you from and what was your childhood like?
I am originally from Indonesia. Since 2007, I have been living elsewhere with my family because of my husband's work. Before that, we lived in Dubai for four years and then moved to Osaka in 2012.
When I think back to my childhood, I remember that my mother often took me to fabric and craft shops. Sewing was her passion and this hobby had a big influence on me. When I was in primary school, she taught me to embroider and since then I have always spent my free time doing some kind of craft.
Is there anything that is specific to the Japanese Instagram community? Is there a trend or something that is exclusive to Japan?
I'm always impressed by the attention to detail. They manage to turn something mundane and ordinary into something exciting just by adding tiny details. I've noticed that a lot of Japanese designs are very influenced by other cultures, like Scandinavian patterns, which are really popular in the art world right now. Despite all of this, they do it in such a clever way that it's still recognizable that it's Japanese in origin. Most people would recognize that it was made by a Japanese person.
We asked Ria about her favorite Instagrammers from Osaka and among the names she gave us, we particularly liked this picture by @hamadahideaki .
How did you get into what you're doing now? Have you always been this creative and can you make a living from it?
For me, my work is not only a hobby, but also a form of meditation. It really helps me calm down and control my emotions. Whenever I feel uncomfortable, I automatically become more productive.
There are always problems when transitioning from a hobby to a business. Time pressure, a tight schedule, marketing and much more. I'm working on it and hopefully it will become a steady source of income soon.
What motivated you to join Instagram?
My motivation was to meet other people from all over the world who have a similar interest in design and crafts as me.
And finally: Do you have a 'word of wisdom' that you would like to pass on to all those who are willing to listen?
I always strive for honesty, especially with myself, in order to ultimately find happiness within myself. I am responsible for my own happiness.
