HOLA, BONJOUR, HELLO! GREETINGS IN MANY LANGUAGES - #POSTCARDSOFTHEMONTH

In a place as diverse as Europe, there are of course various linguistic and cultural differences. These are already noticeable when you meet a friend from another country and there is a brief moment of confusion - and you can't decide between a kiss, a handshake or simply saying 'hello'. To save you a few awkward moments, we have put together some greeting rituals for you!

Hello in Great Britain
A handshake is a very common formal greeting, and hugs are also popular among friends. Kisses on the cheek are rare - and if they are given, then no more than one. Instead, a newcomer is always introduced to the whole group.

Hey in Denmark
Similar to Germany, friends and relatives in Denmark are greeted with a hug, and strangers or acquaintances with a firm handshake. In Scandinavian countries, it is also common for anyone new to a group to introduce themselves!

Hello in Spain
In Spain, there are big differences in greeting depending on the situation. In formal contexts, people shake hands, but in informal situations, women in particular like to greet each other with two kisses.

Bonjour in France
In France, kisses on the cheek are very popular. However, the number depends very much on the region - in Paris, for example, it is usually just one kiss, but in other regions it can be up to four. Hugs, on the other hand, are rare.

Hello in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, people usually shake hands when greeting. Hugs are reserved for friends and family are sometimes greeted with three kisses.

Hello or Bonjour in Belgium
In Belgium, it is very common to greet each other with a kiss. However, strangers are often greeted with just a 'Hi' or a (somewhat hesitant) handshake.

Even though we can now greet each other in our favorite languages, this list is of course just a small start. How can you learn more local customs and traditions? It's easy - by traveling! For a little travel inspiration, check out our #awalkthrough category!
