THE SWEETEST DAY OF THE YEAR - #POSTCARDSOFTHEMONTH

Jul 10, 2024Lorenz Hartmann

The Sweetest Day is celebrated in the USA every year on the third Saturday in October. We are celebrating it this year too and are giving it the honor it deserves with a selection of our sweetest cards . The cute motifs are the first from our new #postcardsofthemonth category this month and are guaranteed to make you smile when you give them to your loved ones. Because that's what the sweetest day of the year is all about! So that you are well prepared, we have put together some facts about Sweetest Day for you:

  1. The celebrations are essentially about giving sweets as a small gift and as a sign of affection. But giving is not just limited to partners. Friends, relatives and colleagues are also given a treat on this day, as are the elderly, the sick and the socially disadvantaged. Incidentally, it is usually the women who give the sweets on the sweetest day of the year.
  2. The first Sweetest Day dates back to October 8, 1921, and was probably celebrated in Cleveland, Ohio. The festival was then re-initiated the following year by 12 Cleveland confectioners, whose efforts resulted in over 20,000 boxes of sweet sins being distributed to the city's newsboys, orphans, elderly and poor.
  3. The day therefore goes back primarily to marketing campaigns by the candy industry or - for those who prefer a more romantic origin story - to a candy store owner who wanted to put a smile on the faces of those less fortunate.
  4. Although the day is not as popular as Valentine's Day, for example, it is still very popular, especially in larger cities such as Detroit, Michigan or Cleveland. This day is already celebrated in 11 states, mainly in the Midwest.
  5. We have even more good news for all those with a sweet tooth out there: In addition to the sweetest day of the year, there is also Candy Day and Cotton Candy Day in the USA and - even more curiously - Peanut Brittle Day and Chocolate-Covered Peanut Day. And there is also International Chocolate Day...

Who are you giving a sweet treat to on Saturday? (Another little tip: it works best with home-baked treats and one of our cute greeting cards.)
