How did you get started with illustrations?
I started drawing a small, illustrated diary for myself during my travels and then took an illustration course in Scotland to learn more about the subject and I really enjoyed it!
Do you have a favourite artist/illustrator?
There are so many! One of my favourite artists is Egon Schiele, an Austrian painter because of his style and the beautiful colours he used in his paintings. I used to live in Vienna and went to Leopoldmuseum quite often to see his work. It was impressive every time!
I follow so many amazing illustrators which makes it hard to pick only one… but for example Amy Moss is one of my favourites, I really admire her style!
Which technique do you prefer when illustrating?
I am mainly creating digital illustrations, but I really like playing with textures and layers on my iPad.
How do you start a design for PICKMOTION? Do you already have an idea in mind, or do you start with random doodles? Can you tell us a bit more about the process?
Usually, I start sketching down random ideas or start with a little research of images I like.
It can also start with a colour palette. If I find a colour palette I like, I will think about the theme that it would work for the best.
Sometimes we also get fun ideas from our brainstorming sessions with everyone in the team, that is the most fun way to come up with new ideas for sure.
From first sketch to final product
Which occasion is the most fun for you to make a PICKMOTION design for?
I definitely enjoy coming up with fun and silly ideas the most. Usually, I do a sketch of the idea first and then think which category would fit best to it. Sometimes it can also change, you start out with a category in mind, and it ends up being a very different idea towards the end of the process. That is what makes it exciting though!
What is your favourite illustration so far?
My favourite illustration at the moment is by Ana Seixas, because it has a nice summery feeling to it. But also the July wallpaper that our intern Jolene designed for our newsletters. It’s this adorable illustration with colorful jelly fish that just have the perfect summer vibe.
Our newsletter freebie from July - designed by our intern Jolene!
Do you like sending/receiving postcards yourself?
I love receiving postcards! Especially when it’s unexpected, it’s a nice little surprise every time! I also like buying postcards for my friends and family but most of the time, but to be honest, I forget to send them unfortunately (laughs).
