NATURAL BEAUTY IN THE BLACK FOREST - #AWALKTHROUGH

Jul 10, 2024Lorenz Hartmann

The Black Forest consists of 80% fir and spruce trees and is considered to be the largest contiguous forest area in Germany. The area was given the name "Black Forest" by the Romans, who found the forest very dark and eerie from the outside. They christened the forest "Silvra nigra" - translated as "black forest" - and preferred to take detours rather than actually entering the forest. The Black Forest is surrounded by beautiful nature and impressive places! One of these is the Triberg Waterfalls , which, with a drop of 163 m, are among the highest waterfalls in Germany. Surrounded by beautiful plants and trees, three paths lead to the waterfall, which is a natural spectacle worth seeing in both summer and winter.

An important symbol and landmark of the Black Forest is the so-called Bollenhut, which has been part of the traditional costume of Protestant women since 1800. Unmarried women wear the hat with red "Bollen" and married women wear black ones. The village of Gutach is considered the home of the Bollenhut and is therefore the perfect place to learn more about the culture of the Black Forest. The open-air museum is particularly suitable for this, as it uses authentic buildings to show how people have lived in the Black Forest over the last 400 years. If you are in Gutach, you should also not miss the toboggan run , on which young and old can toboggan down a track over 1000 meters long! Another must-see is the " Park with all the senses " where barefoot paths lead to scent pavilions, touch stations and flower tunnels.

If you like to go hiking and have a great view of the Black Forest, you shouldn't miss a circular hike to Mooskopf. The hiking trail is easy to manage with a height difference of around 316 meters and long paths and leads to the impressive Lothar monument near Gegenbach. The monument commemorates the hurricane Lothar, which raged in December 1999 and created new views of the Rhine Valley. Today, the Lothar monument is an impressive photo spot with a great panoramic view of the Black Forest.

Another great place for hiking and walking is the 1284 meter high Schauinsland mountain near Freiburg. The observation tower at the top of the mountain offers fantastic views over the countryside and is particularly easy to reach with the Schauinsland cable car . Whether by gondola or on foot, there are countless ways to enjoy nature and take impressive photos!

If you want to climb even higher mountains, you should visit the highest mountain in the Black Forest. The 1493 meter high Feldberg offers a variety of idyllic paths and breathtaking panoramas over the country. Of course, you can also take a gondola up the mountain and enjoy the view from there. Below the mountain lies the Feldsee, which is also a real eye-catcher thanks to its steep slopes. In winter, the Feldberg is covered in snow and is a popular ski resort until May.

For some relaxation by the water, a visit to the wonderful Titisee is worthwhile. In summer, the natural lake is a real bathing paradise, but even in the colder seasons it is a beautiful place to stroll and enjoy nature. The many long-distance hiking trails are perfect for exploring and taking floral snapshots or impressive landscape photos!
