- In addition to Rudolph, there are 8 other reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Although these names sound more like male animals, it is not unlikely that they are females - because male reindeer shed their antlers in winter!
- Tinsel was invented in Germany in 1610 and was once made of real silver.
- Although we traditionally celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas, neither December 24 nor December 25 are mentioned in the Bible. In fact, most historians believe that Jesus was born in spring, not winter.
- Coca-Cola played a big role in the creation of our current image of Santa Claus. It wasn't until the drinks company hired an illustrator named Haddon Sundblom in 1931 to create images of him for magazine advertisements that we got the warm and friendly Santa we know today. Before that, he probably looked a lot grumpier and even a little scary.
- Standing under the mistletoe still has a romantic meaning today. Originally, mistletoe was even considered an aphrodisiac - at least among the Druids. The plant is an ancient symbol of fertility and masculinity.
