HELIN BEREKET THE ORDER AND DISORDER OF THINGS

Jul 10, 2024Lorenz Hartmann

Berlin is where Helin takes her photos, often wandering around the city for hours and then: new housing blocks, pensioners hurrying past, old buildings and the steel blue of the sky. She has lived in the city for eight years - which she has left behind time and again to travel to Iceland, Ethiopia and Thailand, among other places, while her family lives in Istanbul. She speaks German perfectly - at the age of 11 she decided to learn German, mainly because of a German family she had befriended on holiday.

The fact that she studied architecture and loves the order of things is evident in the lines and the choice of cutouts. But then there is this other element of disorder, contrast and humor that always adds a touch of imperfection to every photo. @helinbereket, like many others, has benefited from the suggested user list and has been able to expand her reach, but she still doesn't want to call herself an influencer or, surprisingly, a photographer - "I don't like labels."

Indirectly with her pictures and descriptions, directly with various art projects (Helin studied at the art university in Berlin), she repeatedly reduces the logic of success on Instagram to absurdity. She counters the feel-good and selfie accounts with precise observation and funny comments - for example about the finissage of an exhibition: "If you want to see it, go home and cry because it's over now." Hashtags like #theconfusedpigeon or #helinsayshello are her favorite running gags.

Finally, two examples of Helin’s artistic projects.

“Instaglam” was an art project as part of 48-hour Neukölln. The photo collage made from footage from Instagram “questions how people present themselves online and explores the motivation to observe semi-fictional life plans of mostly strangers.”

As part of the photo competition #changeyourperspective, Helin developed a photo series with mirrors. Covering and revealing their features has the potential to reflect on the view of the female body and false truths.
