Old Town Market
If you are in Braunschweig, you should definitely stop by the Old Town Market. The square was created in the 12th century and was the location for markets, fairs and earlier equestrian games. There are impressive monuments around the market, such as the Old Town Hall, the Gewandhaus and St. Martini Church. Even today, there is a weekly market every Wednesday and Saturday full of fresh fruit and vegetables and many other delicacies - it is well worth a visit.

Castle Square
The infamous Brunswick Lion, which was erected as a landmark in 1166 by order of Duke Henry the Lion, is located on the castle square. The castle square is surrounded by many other sights and still shows the medieval layout. A great spot for photos!

St. Blasii Cathedral
On the southern side of the castle square is the St. Blasii Cathedral. The church, which is now an Evangelical Lutheran church, was built between 1173 and 1195 and was chosen as the burial place of Henry the Lion and his wife Mathilde. The medieval furnishings are particularly worth seeing, such as the Mary Altar, the many artistic wall paintings and the tomb of Henry the Lion and Mathilde.

Dankwarderode Castle
Also located directly on the castle square is Dankwarderode Castle - another landmark from Braunschweig, which was built as a residence based on the model of the imperial palaces. The castle burned down in a fire in 1873, but was rebuilt a few years later. Today it houses a medieval section of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum , making it a must for all culture fans.

Residence Palace
Another beautiful place to visit is the classicist Braunschweig Residence Palace, which was built between 1831 and 1841. Unfortunately, it was badly damaged and demolished during the Second World War. 46 years after it was demolished, however, the main facade was rebuilt using more than 600 original parts and with the help of old plans and photos, and it looks magnificent again! Today, the rooms are used by the city archives, the city library and the cultural institute. There are also the so-called Schloss-Arkaden , which is the largest shopping center in Braunschweig with around 150 shops and restaurants. So if you want to go shopping, you will definitely find what you are looking for here.

Magniviertel
The Magniviertel is one of the oldest districts in Braunschweig. Around the rebuilt Magnikirche and Magnikirchplatz there are numerous very well-preserved houses and pretty historic half-timbered buildings. There are also many cozy cafes, pubs and restaurants to discover, making it a particularly popular meeting place among students. In autumn the so-called Magnifest takes place there - a traditional street festival that promises a great experience!

Richmond Castle
A historical gem in Braunschweig: In the south of the city is the Richmond Palace, which was once the refuge of Duchess Augusta. The palace is surrounded by an English landscape park and rewards visitors with a wide view over ponds, winding paths and small temples in the distance. A visit in May is particularly recommended: That's when the rhododendrons bloom in magnificent colors and the surrounding area is a fantastic excursion destination and popular photo spot for summer pictures. The palace is now rented out for charitable and private events and is also used as a registry office for weddings. So romantic!
