Altstadtmarkt (Old Town Square)
If you are in Braunschweig, you should definitely stop by the Altstadtmarkt (Old Town Square). The square was laid out as early as the 12th century and was the venue for markets, fairs or earlier equestrian games. Around the market you will find impressive monuments such as the Old Town Hall, the Gewandhaus or St Martin's Church. Even today there is still a weekly market on site every Wednesday and Saturday full of fresh fruit & vegetables and many other delicacies - well worth a visit!

Burgplatz (Castle Square)
The Burgplatz (Castle Square) is home to the infamous Braunschweig Lion, which was commissioned by Duke Henry the Lion to be put up as a landmark in 1166. The Castle Square is surrounded by many other sights and still shows the medieval layout. A great spot for photos!

St. Blasii Cathedral
St. Blasii Cathedral is located on the southern side of the Castle Square. The church, which is now a Lutheran church, was built between 1173 and 1195 and was chosen as the burial place of Henry the Lion and his wife Mathilde. Particularly worth seeing are the medieval furnishings, such as the altar of Mary, the many ornate wall paintings and the tomb of Henry the Lion and Mathilde.

Dankwarderode Castle
Also directly on Castle Square you will see the Dankwarderode Castle - another landmark from Braunschweig, built as a residence on the model of the imperial palaces. The castle burned down in a fire in 1873 but was rebuilt a few years later. Today it houses a medieval section of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, making it a must-see for all culture fans.

Residence Palace
Another beautiful place to visit is the neo-classical Braunschweig Residence Palace which was built from 1831 to 1841. Unfortunately, it was badly damaged and demolished during the Second World War. However, 46 years after its demolition, the main façade was rebuilt with more than 600 original parts and with the help of old plans and photos which made it look magnificent again! Today, the premises are used by the City Archive, the City Library and the Cultural Institute. It is also home to the so-called Schloss-Arkaden, Braunschweig's largest shopping centre with around 150 shops and restaurants. If you feel like shopping, you will most likely find what you are looking for here.

Magniviertel (Magni Quarter)
The Magni Quarter is one of Braunschweig's oldest districts. Around the rebuilt Magnichurch and Magni church square you will find numerous, very well-preserved houses and pretty historic half-timbered buildings. You will also come across many cosy cafés, pubs and restaurants in this part of town, making it a particularly popular meeting place among students. In autumn, the so-called Magnifest always takes place here - a traditional street festival that promises a great experience!

Richmond Palace
A historical gem in Braunschweig can be found in the south of the city: Richmond Palace, which used to be the retreat place of Duchess Augusta. The palace grounds are surrounded by an English landscape park and will reward you with sweeping views over ponds, winding paths and small temples in the distance. A visit in May is especially recommended as the rhododendrons will bloom in magnificent colours and the surroundings will turn into a fantastic excursion area and popular photo spot for summer pictures. Incidentally, the castle is now rented out for charitable and private events and is also used as a registry office for wedding ceremonies. So romantic!
